Raya Sports & Events is the Philippine organizing group of the 2006 Philippines World Pool Championship. It is a division of PRISM Strategic Communications, a company engaged in communications management, publishing, public relations, and marketing.

Raya manages and promotes sports tournaments, business conferences and entertainment events. Its specialization covers all aspects in the organization of events: from conceptualization to events management to sponsorship marketing to public relations. 

On August 14-20, 2006, Raya successfully organized the biggest national pool tournament staged in the Philippines: the BSCP National Pool Championship. The event brought over a hundred Filipino pool players in competition at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. At the end of the six-day event, Alex Pagulayan, the reigning US Open champion and 2004 world pool champion, took the title of Filipino national pool champion.

The 2006 Philippines World Pool Championship is the biggest event in Raya’s calendar this year. In organizing the event, the sports group is being assisted by the Billiards & Snooker Congress of the Philippines (BSCP), the billiards governing body in the country, and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), the government agency in charge of sports development.

The Raya organization is headed by Yen Makabenta, chairman and CEO. He is also currently the chairman of BSCP. His professional background includes stints as a newspaper editor and columnist, director for policy research in government, and speechwriter to two Philippine presidents.

Note on the Raya Name and Icon:

Raya  is the Malay word for “great.”
